I think it's because of communist connections that Russian literature was once in fashion in China. I know a handful of names, all of whom nineteenth century writers of "westernised Russian literature", that I like to say out loud, for I like the sound of them. It is a privilege to be acquainted from childhood with "classified knowledge" as a social phenomenon. This is not to say I've read widely and know much about Russian literature. Read abridged version of War and Peace in Chinese and don't remember much of it except that WD's favourite character is Andrew (or Andrei? There's no way of knowing since they're the same in Chinese translation). Read Anna Karenina but didn't understand what the point is esp of the character Levin (Now I can google it up though, before Microsoft crushes it.) Once, when playing with Jo's dogs reached a peak, I thought of getting my own dog and calling it "Dotstoevsky", or "Dots" for short. In general though, Russian novels, the poverty, the schizophrenic characters, are a little depressing.

I did Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky and the shorter stuff, and like my friend Kim, got hung up around the middle of Crime and Punishment, unable to finish it. I gave a paperback copy to a 9th grade student (15) who actually was able to finish it. She really liked it, but she was into shock and horror stuff. As for Tolstoy, I did the shorter works (A Confession is amazing) for my senior thesis. Great stuff. I could recommend all of the shorter Tolstoy, but start with that 1.
As for names that I like hearing, Robert Fagles, a translator of Greek Mythology did some of the stuff on a tape in it's original language. It just sounded so amazing. Some words just come out sounding awesome like that.
As for liking the way names sound, none is better than Seattle Mariners pitcher - Shigetosi Hasagawa. All of those syllables and the way they just roll. Former Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sixto Lezcano also had a cool name.
But enough of that... have a good 1 and enjoy your literature whatever names and languages it derives from... even if you stick with the misery laden Brits (Mind you, I would have stayed in England had it all been different - I love the place, but they are condemned to the lack of sun and mopiness of so many of their people).
